When I grew up, I was a moderate Republican because my parents were. I remember being on the bus and telling my peers to have their parents vote for the Republican for President. However, that all changed when I went to college. In my first year, I took a Sociology class, a Political Science class, and a Psychology class. I realized that in my heart, I was a Democrat because I could see that the sociological and psychological studies showed that the policies of the Democratic Party were by far the ones that helped people be happy and productive. From then on, I voted for Democrats.
In the early 2000s, I read two books that helped me see the larger picture: Generations and The Fourth Turning by two sociologists. I began to understand the cycles of change that take place in our country, and I realized that’s what was happening right now – with the Backlash hot on our heels. As a sociologist myself, I wrote The 80-Year Cycle of Transformation: Why Liberals Are Winning to help you be more optimistic about our future.
I earned a Bachelor’s degree in Sociology with a minor in Political Science from Indiana University as well as a Master’s degree in Public Administration from the University of Arizona. I taught sociology classes for 10 years at Pima Community College and I currently teach online courses on assertiveness, teamwork, and self-confidence. In addition to being the author of The 80-Year Cycle of Transformation: Why Liberals Are Winning, I am the co-author of Self-Esteem for Dummies in the Dummies series.
I am the former Outreach Director and 2nd Vice Chair of the Pima County Democratic Party and President of the League of Women Voters of Greater Tucson.
